-*- coding: utf-8 -*- the following is from http://www.peta.org/news/99/699impot.html accessed around 2002 ssss--------------------------------------------------- News Release: PETA BILLBOARDS TARGETING IMPOTENCE IN MEAT-EATERS REJECTED IN FIVE STATES 1-900-GET-ON-UP Hotline Offers Veggie Alternative to Viagra For Immediate Release: June 1, 1999 Contact: Michael McGraw 757-622-7382 Norfolk, Va. -- PETA's plans to erect billboards promoting vegetarianism have gone limp throughout cattle country, where advertising companies have found the message too racy to run. The ads feature a curvaceous, bikini-clad vegetarian declaring, "I threw a party-but the cattlemen couldn't come. Eating meat can cause impotence." Dangling a string of suggestive sausages from her hand, she encourages consumers to "Call my hotline at 1-900-GET-ON-UP" for more information. PETA's latest effort to promote vegetarianism has been turned down across the "Beef Belt," where advertisers in Dallas, Houston, and Lubbock, Texas; Omaha, Neb.; Kansas City, Kan.; Tulsa, Okla.; and Colorado Springs, Colo. have refused to lease space for the billboard. Undeterred, PETA intends to arouse interest in its veggie message by running the ad in men's bathroom stalls and in newspapers and magazines. The thrust behind PETA's provocative new campaign is research showing that fat and cholesterol in meat and other animal products clog up the arteries going to all organs, not just the heart. So while Viagra has caused a stir in America's bedrooms, vegetarians have had a secret weapon in their kitchens all along: tofu and veggies. Eating a low-fat vegetarian diet is the ideal way to help prevent impotence and also cuts the risk of heart disease, cancer, and stroke-the top three causes of death. And going veg is also the best way to show love-for animals who spend their entire lives on factory farms, where they are castrated without anesthesia and confined to small, overcrowded stalls, cages, or crates, often unable to take a single step or even turn around. Giving meat the kissoff means choosing respect for animals over the horrors of factory farming. "Choose a veggie burger in the kitchen for a whopper in the bedroom," says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk.
